What is a lead magnet?

A lead magnet is a tool in your business that attracts subscribers to your email list.

For example, you might be offered 10% off your first order from a clothing brand if you subscribe to their newsletter.

But lead magnets can be so much more than that. You can use a lead magnet to demonstrate your skill and expertise, so as well as building your list you’re also showing future clients and customers what it’s like to work with you.

If you are a service-based business this is a great opportunity for prospective clients to test drive your offer. So make it valuable for them and it will be valuable for you.

A few different ideas for lead magnets include:

  • Toolkit
  • Cheat Sheet
  • Checklist
  • Template
  • Masterclass
  • Workbook
  • Guide
  • Mini-Course
  • Challenge
  • Quiz

Think about which one might suit your business best. Consider the challenges that your audience face and how best to serve them. For example, an hour-long masterclass might not be the best freebie for a time-poor working mum, but a checklist might be.

These ideas are all suited towards a service-based business. If you are an eCommerce-based business then discounts, free shipping and free gifts all work well.

Personally, I find ‘done is better than perfect’ hard to accept. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and I agree with the sentiment that putting something out there is much better than doing nothing. However I think it should come with a caveat; your audience, community, clients, and customers deserve value at every step.

A well-designed lead magnet in terms of content and style is going to convert more subscribers into clients.

So it’s worth putting the effort in.

It will also demonstrate your knowledge and skills, you will be perceived as professional and build trust.
